Pauline was the only child born to Paul Hopkins and Marion (Duhon) Garlow on January 19, 1943 in Beaumont, Texas. Pauline graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School in 1963 as valedictorian. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Education with certifications in both English and Spanish from Lamar University. Pauline furthered her education and obtained master’s degrees in both Education and Guidance and Counseling from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. She completed her student teaching and continued to work as an English teacher at Hebert High School and South Park High School for 16 years before becoming the school counselor at South Park High school. As a counselor, she worked at the high school and elementary levels, implementing many programs to assist at–risk youth and underserved populations within the District. She was a dedicated educator with a desire for bringing out the best in every student she encountered, challenging them to strive for greatness. Once retired from the Beaumont Independent School District, her work continued as volunteer teaching at-risk youth with Ben’s Kids, as a Foster Grandparent, Court Appointed Special Advocate (C.A.S.A.), and substitute teacher, continuing to pursue her passion of helping children in need.
Along with her service as an educator Pauline was deeply concerned about her community and very involved in the political arena. She served as Executive Secretary for the Jefferson County Democratic Party for 27 years, working tirelessly to assist many candidates and working to ensure local elections were run according to code. She served her community on every level and gave her very best in each organization, board, committee, or council on which she held a seat. Pauline was often sought out for her insight, knowledge, and wisdom by her colleagues for problem solving and to provide knowledge of processes regarding multiple disciplines. She was a mentor’s mentor and champion for the underdog.
Pauline entered The Lord’s loving arms on August 21, 2019. She was preceded in death by her father Paul Hopkins and Stepfather Ewell M. Garlow. Left to cherish memories of her are her mother Marion Garlow; her devoted husband and caregiver of 53 years, Nelson Mouton; sons Chris Mouton and Gregory Mouton; daughters in love Leslie Mouton and Sharonda Mouton; grandchildren Blake Lewis, Amarys Mouton, Jalen Malvo, Kyra Malvo, Caden Mouton, and Kayla Mouton; siblings Barbara Alpough and sister(cousin) Marion Morris; a special daughter, Tawana Walter-Cadien. Also left to remember her legacy are many loved ones, life-long friends, colleagues, students, and those she mentored whom she loved dearly. Pauline’s commitment and love for her family, friends, students, her devoted service to every organization with which she served, and overall love for the forgotten will be forever cherished and greatly missed.
